The West Virginia Mountaineers ACHA men’s D2 hockey team against the St. Joseph’s Hawks Saturday night at Morgantown Municipal Ice Arena.

The D2 Mountaineers move to 5-1.

St. Joseph’s took the lead with 1:07 left in the first period, and they took this lead into both intermissions.

With 9:59 left in the third period, Nathan Panchisin equalized the game, assisted by Ben Murphy and Nicholas, and an unassisted goal from Mark Stankiewicz the Mountaineers the lead with 6:10 to play in the game.

However, the Hawks took the lead with 3:42 to play, forcing overtime.

But for the second time on the day following D1’s game, West Virginia would not be denied in overtime, with Dayne Martin scoring following an assist from Stankiewicz on a two-on-one breakaway.

WVU head coach Tyler Kutek said the team’s mental strength helped them come back to win.

“I would say the big thing that led us to that comeback victory would be, being relentless and doing all the hard things that some teams may not be willing to do, and what I mean by that are the hard backchecks, battling it out and winning puck battles. The biggest thing is believing in one another especially when battling through some adversity.”

The D2 Mountaineers play next in three weeks when they play George Washington at home on Saturday, Nov. 12.
