In Game 50, the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs received strong pitching from Michael McGinnis and clutch hitting to sink the playoff bound North Shore Navigators 6-3 on the road in Lynn.
The Dirt Dawgs struck for a run in the first as Jake Archey delivered a two-out single to bring in Shane Keddy for the early 1-0 lead off North Shore lefty Josh Desai.
That would be the only scoring for five innings as Dirt Dawgs righty McGinnis, receiving his first start for the Dirt Dawgs, had his full repertoire working and was masterful keeping the Navs hitters off-balance with his changeup, surrendering no hits and one walk on an efficient 45 pitches to the tough North Shore line-up.
Wachusett DH Jake Archey led off the 6th with a double, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by first baseman Davidson Peguero.
In the bottom of the 6th, McGinnis received strong support in the field as John Lefeber made a nice running catch in left and Eric Hailer used a quick release on a slow chopper to 3rd to get McGinnis thru 6 with his no hitter intact.
In the 7th, the Navigators brought on Jhonneris Mendez who quickly retired the first two batters on strikeouts. Shane Keddy followed with a deep drive to center and legged out a triple. The Dirt Dawgs again looked for some clutch hitting with Eric Hailer at the plate, who delivered a single to left to give the Dirt Dawgs a 3-0 lead. After a single by Archey, Catcher Derek Gardella broke the game open with a long homerun to left off Mendez to extend the lead to 6-0.
In the bottom of the 7th a one-out hot liner by the Navs Hendrick handcuffed the Dirt Dawgs Hailer, putting the official scorer in a tough spot. After initially flashing a hit, the play was changed to an error after further review. The next batter reached on a second error putting runners on the corners with one out, bringing the Navs center fielder Tony Serino to the plate. On a one strike pitch, Serino blooped a hit to center for the first Navs hit, but McGinnis bore down after a visit from Coach Barese to get the next two hitters to complete his night's work with a tremendous 7 inning one-hit effort.
The Navs tacked on a couple runs in the 9th, but finished with a mere three hits on the night as the Dirt Dawgs brought home their first win of the season against the Navigators.
Notes:
The three hits represented a season low at home for the Navigators.
