HUNTSVILLE – The first two periods on Saturday afternoon’s game at the Von Braun Center ended with the Havoc and Macon Mayhem tied.
However, Huntsville took control in the third to secure the win and salvage a split of the weekend series with the Mayhem by a score of 5-4.
“I loved the players’ response after a subpar performance Friday night,” said Havoc Head Coach Glenn Detulleo. “They came out strong and, despite giving up two early goals, stuck with the game plan and eventually were rewarded with an important win.”
Macon jumped out to a quick two goal lead and held on to it until three minutes left in the opening period. Rob Darrar helped light the lamp for Huntsville with a sweet centering pass to Christian Powers in the slot who popped the puck over the keeper’s glove for the home team’s first score. About 90 seconds later, Nolan Kaiser smashed a slapshot from the top of the right circle during a powerplay to tie the game going in to the first intermission.
Macon retook the lead in the first five minutes of the second period, but Darrar tied up the game on a slapshot of his own :17 into a powerplay.
The Mayhem took the lead for the third time by scoring just past the four-minute mark, but Huntsville’s Derek Perl re-tied the game a minute later with a wrap-around of the visiting goal and under the netminder’s pads.
Powers finally gave Huntsville their first lead of the game, scoring his second of the night with exactly 10 minutes remaining by wristing a shot under the bar on the glove side to provide the final score.
The highlights from the game can be found at the Havoc YouTube page.
The Havoc doubled Macon’s shot output 47 to 23.
Each team scored a pair of powerplay goals on the night.
Darrar recorded a goal and three assists, extending his point streak to seven games (5g, 10a).
