LYNN, Mass. – Records were made to be broken, and the 2017 Wachusett Dirt Dawgs continue to break both team and league records after their 8-1 win against the North Shore Navigator, Tuesday morning at Fraser Field.
The Basics
Score: Wachusett Dirt Dawgs 8, North Shore Navigators 1
Records: Wachusett Dirt Dawgs (27-21) | North Shore Navigators (20-30)
How it Happened
Eddie Santiago (Mitchell) dazzled the Navigators from the start of the game. The southpaw went 5.0 scoreless inning, allowing just four hits, while striking out six. Kyle Cala (Wagner) led the way at the plate for the Dirt Dawgs with his second straight 3-RBI performance.
Wachusett got on the board early as Mike Coggeshall (Assumption), Zack Tower (Franklin Pierce) and Cala had three consecutive RBI base hits to give the Dirt Dawgs the early 3-0 advantage in the top of the third. Santiago ran into a little trouble in the bottom of the third inning, as the Mariner got out of the bases loaded situation with a four pitch strikeout to retire the side.
In the sixth inning the lead was expanded as Cala scored on a groundout by Joe Jumonville (Northern Ill) making it 4-0. Next inning, Jack Gethings (Fairfield), Bradley Wood (Northern Ill) and Jake Byrne (Assumption) all came around to score, pushing the Dirt Dawgs advantage to 7-0.
After the Navigators scored one run in the bottom of the eighth, Wachusett added an insurance run in the ninth, as Cala drove in Thomas Hughes (Oklahoma) on a single.
