AMARILLO, TX – The seventh Amarillo Bulls Main Camp is underway with a new venue for the second time in as many years.
The Bulls Main Camp is taking place near Pittsburgh, PA and close to 130 hopefuls have converged on the two ice rinks looking to impress Coaches Matt Nicholson, Tony Attanucci as well as several scouts in attendance. The Goalie Camp started activities and soon the games will get underway with cuts being made tomorrow (Friday) and again Saturday, before a finale All-Star Game on Sunday.
Amarillo won just 13 games last year and finished out of the Robertson Cup playoff fight for the 2nd time in as many years. One of the biggest issues that plagued the Bulls was the lack of offence dropping 20 games by one goal and 30 by two goals. Head Coach Matt Nicholson said that offence is a big buzz word for them this camp.
“Everyone was excited to get back on the ice and get the season officially going,” said Nicholson earlier in the week. “There are no secrets, and we are looking for players who can step up, make a plays and finish in front of the net.”
Nicholson said they are starting with the blank slate and it’s up to the players to decide who makes the team.
“We are trying to keep an open mind,” he said. “From what we pick from Main Camp we can implement a game plan based on that. We are not going to turn away players who can help us.”
Forwards George Mika, Charlie Singerhouse, Michael Forman are among those players who are back for their second full season in a Bulls uniform. The trio is joined by a collection of free agents, tenders and draft picks. Matt Nehls, Phil Fromberger, lead a strong contingent on defense. One area the Bulls were busy working on during the off season was in goal as both Brian Baker and Anton Martinsson have moved on to the NCAA. Nikita Babintsev and Kyle Madore are expected to battle for the team’s goaltending spots.
The Bulls Coaching Staff were busy throughout the summer travelling to various USHL camps at as well as speaking to players, advisors and parents by phone.
Once Main Camp has concluded those players who have made the list will move on to the Texas Panhandle in mid-August to begin Training Camp at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. Exhibition games are expected to be played, and dates will be announced at a later date.
The Amarillo Bulls regular season faces off Friday, Sept. 9 against the defending South Division Champion Wichita Falls Wildcats at Kay Yeager Coliseum. The 21st consecutive home opener in Amarillo Hockey History hits the ice on Saturday, Sept. 10 against the Odessa Jackalopes at 7 pm. After another home game the following weekend, the Bulls will hit the road for two consecutive weeks including the exciting North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
