In what turned into a dominating performance by West Chester, the Pirates were unable to get on the board. The Golden Rams remain a perfect 12-0-0 in CSCHC play heading into the break, while Seton Hall drops to 2-10-0. SHU’s effort was noticeable throughout the game, including many blocked shots and D-zone exits. However, their structure was not as strong as in past games, giving up a volume of shots and quality chances from WCU. The Pirates were hemmed in defensively for long stretches, giving up repeated odd-man rushes and extended offensive-zone shifts. On offense, Seton Hall couldn’t establish much rhythm, but still had quality chances. Zone entries were challenged, and once in the offensive zone, the Pirates struggled to convert any cycle looks or get to the net consistently. This game underscored a few of the season’s recurring issues: offense and fatigue. On the bright side, the game also provided a stark reminder of what SHU is building: a defense-first identity that, if paired with better offensive execution, will make them more competitive. The key for the second half will be turning structural defensive work into real momentum offensively, especially when facing high-powered teams.

First-Half Season Wrap-Up

  • The Pirates have struggled in their first semester, showing flashes of strong defensive effort but repeatedly coming up short on offense
  • In league play (CSCHC) and non-conference games, Seton Hall’s goaltending and shot blocking have kept them in games, but a lack of scoring consistency has made it difficult to close
  • The blue line and forwards have done a lot of the “dirty work”
    • Blocking shots, breaking up checks, clearing high-danger opportunities
  • In multiple games, SHU’s structure has held firm for long stretches, showing real buy-in on the back end
  • The goaltenders have faced very high shot volumes in several games
    • A testament to the team’s ability to compete in front of net but also a warning sign that shots allowed needs to come down
  • Generating offense has been an uphill battle
    • SHU has had difficulty sustaining pressure in the offensive zone
    • Turnovers in the neutral zone and poor zone entries have limited high-quality scoring chances
    • The power play has had opportunities but hasn’t always capitalized, putting more pressure on 5-on-5 play.
  • There have been games where SHU played well for 40–50 minutes, keeping the game close or competitive
  • When the Pirates have maintained structure, they’ve looked very capable.
    • But late-period breakdowns (especially in the third) have cost them, either in fatigue or execution
  • Several of their opponents have strong, experienced club programs.
  • The schedule has not been forgiving, and SHU’s margin for error has been thin.
  • These games are serving as lessons: what works defensively, what breaks down in transition, and where they need to improve to be a more consistent threat
