Oilers and Miners split in epic double header

Monday, July 17
Game one of the Peninsula Oilers and Mat Su Miners double header on Monday featured lights out pitching from both squads. The first of two 7 inning games went into extras with no score. Drew Christo was spectacular through all 7 innings. The righty from Nebraska allowed only four hits, no earned runs, walked nobody, and he struck out 10 Miners batters. For the Oilers, Arnad Mulamekic and Mose Hayes split a masterful game. Mulamekic tossed the first 5 scoreless innings before handing it off to Hayes to throw the final 4 innings. With the game still scoreless through 8 innings, the ABL sudden death rule came into effect. The Oilers came out on top in the final “bonus” inning of play. Though the score technically finished 0-0, the sudden death rule eliminates any chance of a tie or endless extra innings. The Oilers took game one 1-0 through 9 innings. In game number two, the Miners put up 3 runs and shutout the Oilers again. Alex Vergara drove in 2 of the 3 Mat Su runs. Larry Westall chucked a great game for the Miners and helped with shut down the Oilers offense. A split for Mat Su was not necessarily what the first place club was hoping for on Monday, but they improve to 17-12 and still sit in the top spot.
Final scores:
Game 1: Oilers 1, Miners 0
Game 2: Oilers 0, Miners 3
