D2 SPARTANS WIN 2nd SCHC TITLE

TAMPA, Florida. - The Tampa Spartans Men’s Hockey Team scored 7 goals in their Semi-Final win against the D3 Tampa team to move on to the finals against USF.

 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

 

Final: Tampa (D3) 1, Tampa (D2) 7

Records: Tampa (D3) (1-0-0), Tampa (D3) (1-1-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1:

 

1st Period

  •  -The D2 team started the scoring off in this game of Spartans on a one-timer top shelf goal from Ryan Murray with the pass coming from Ryan Andrews
  •  -The D3 guys got one for themselves on a nice goal from John DiFilippo for his 3rd of the playoffs
  • -Josey Davis of the D2 Spartans had a shot from the point that found its way through to put them up 2-1
  •  -D2 got another before the period ended with another one-timer from Frank Catalina and the pass from Tyler Kelly

2nd Period

  •  -The only goal in this period came from D2’s Gus Aldridge stemming from a hard-working shift that led to the five-hole tuck

3rd Period

  •  -The D2 team kept their scoring run going as Matthew Needleman popped one early in the period to give them some momentum going forward
  •  -Another goal came for the D2 Spartans as Stephen Buck did it all himself on his unassisted goal
  •  -The final goal of the game was awarded to D2’s Needleman for his second of the game to make the final 7-1.

 

GAME 2: UT vs. USF

 

WESLEY CHAPEL, Florida. – The University of Tampa’s Men’s Hockey Team scored 6 goals in the Championship bout against USF to win the SCHC for the first time in 6 years.

 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

 

Final: USF 4, Tampa 6

Records: Tampa (2-0-0), USF (1-1-0)

Location: Advent Health Center Ice | Wesley Chapel, FL

 

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2:

 

1st Period

  •  -This game started off unlike any other for the Spartans as both teams were held scoreless as Tampa Junior Joe Bagi totaled 11 saves in the first period
  •  -The Spartans tallied 14 shots of their own in this 0-0 championship game.

2nd Period

  •  -A goal finally came for the bad guys as USF took the first lead of the game.
  •  -On their second powerplay chance of the game, the Spartans finally capitalized with a goal from Junior Grant Parrish, tying the game at 1.
  •  -More bad news came as the USF hockey club got another to give them another lead.
  •  -USF, unfortunately for the Spartans, scored another goal to make the score 3-1 at the end of the second period.

3rd Period

  •  -Tampa started off their big period with another powerplay goal from Grant Parrish to give them some momentum to carry them through the period.
  •  -Frank Catalina got his first of the game, short-handed, tying the game at 3 with assists coming from Andrews and Hoffberg.
  •  -Another shorthanded goal for the Spartans came from Senior Defenseman Cam Sacco for his first of the year at just the right time giving Tampa their first lead of the game.
  •  -With 4 minutes left, USF happened to get another goal to make the game interesting with a tie score of 4-4.
  •  -That did not last long as League MVP Billy Cody walked around the USF goalie to give the Sparts the lead
  •  -Adding insult to injury, Tampa’s Ryan Andrews sniped one unassisted to put the championship away for the Spartans with a final of 6-4.
