Alumni drive offence to force Game 7s in Eastern & Western Conference semifinals

CAMBRIDGE, Ont. - Thursday night's National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup playoff games were exciting, and what's maybe even more exciting is the fans of all four teams involved in the Western and Eastern Conference semifinals will get to enjoy at least one more game of action from their favourite team as both series' are headed to Game 7.

Canada's last-standing team, the Vancouver Canucks forced a Game 7 in their matchup against the powerhouse, Vegas Golden Knights. This was thanks to a brilliant effort by the Canucks and multiple former Ontario Hockey Association alumni on their club.

The story of the Canucks last two victories has been goaltender Thatcher Demko who has backstopped the team to consecutive wins after filling in for the 'unfit to play' Jakob Markstrom. The Canucks won Game 6 4-0, and offense was driven by players he used to play in the OHA. Former St. Michael's Buzzers AP Quinn Hughes added to his postseason point-total by picking a goal and an assist which gives him 16 points in 16 playoff games. D-man Chris Tanev played three seasons in the OJHL and he also got on the scoresheet with an assist in the win. Also, adding points were former St. Thomas Stars AP Bo Horvat who scored his 10th of the playoffs, and Waterloo Siskins and Kitchener Dutchmen alum Tanner Pearson added an assist.

The Cancuks will hope to keep its playoff run alive Friday night when they face the Golden Knights in Game 7 at 9 P.M. E.T.

In the Eastern Conference matchup between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders, there was a bit more offence as Game 6 ended with a 5-4 Flyers victory in double-overtime.

The Flyers, like the Canucks, overcame a 3-1 series deficit and tied the series up at 3-3 with the Game 6 win. Russian-born defenceman Ivan Provorov scored the game-winning goal for Philly to ensure Game 7 would be played in the series.

OHA alumni providing offence in this contest included former Welland Cougar Cal Clutterbuck (1 assist), ex-Blenheim and Sarnia Blast forward Matt Martin (1 goal) and Flyers forward and former St. Michael's Buzzers AP Scott Laughton scored his fifth goal of the postseason.

Game 7 of the Islanders/Flyers series goes Sat., Sept. 5 at 7:30 P.M. E.T.
