Former West Durham Ironhead Jake Gilmour was selected by the Denver Outlaws in the 2019 Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft on October 24th.
“Obviously being drafted is something very exciting and humbling as I’ve been working my whole life towards,” said Gilmour. “I had never been drafted in any other draft prior to this so it was an amazing feeling and something that my family or I will not forget anytime soon. Overall it was a mix of shocked and excited when I got the phone call.”
In his senior season, the Pickering, ON native helped lead the Saint Leo University Lions to their program’s first berth to the NCAA DII Finals. Gilmour also holds multiple program records at Saint Leo including most points(242), assists(122), game winning goals(10) and games played(61) in program history and sits second in all-time goals(120). Gilmour was also named a First Team USILA All-American and Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year in his senior year where he tallied 78 points in 19 games. The lefty attackman was named USILA Scholar All-American due to their outstanding work in the classroom and success on the field.
During his time with the I-Heads, Gilmour netted 61 goals(6th All-Time) and 76 assists(5th All-Time) for 137 points(Fifth All-Time) in 53 regular season games from 2014-2016. Away from the scoresheet, Gilmour was fierce competitor, willing to do whatever it takes to help his team be successful. The former Ironheads standout credits a lot of his development in lacrosse from playing with the Ironheads.
“ Playing for the Ironheads was a great experience for me. They gave me the opportunity to come home from school and jump right back into game action as my school season would often overlap with the start of box season. The two parts of my game I benefited most from my time with the Ironheads was my foot speed and my vision while on offence. I can’t thank the organization enough for everything they did for me and getting me to this point in my career.”
The Denver Outlaws are the defending MLL Champions, which makes the task of cracking a very talented roster even more difficult, but Gilmour is ready for the challenge.
“It is always motivating when you are able to join a very well know organization like Denver is, they have clearly been a powerhouse in the league for many years and of course have won a handful of championships in the last five years,” said Gilmour. “I have always been a hard working player but knowing how competitive of an environment training camp will be makes it even more exciting. This off season I want to obviously get bigger, faster, stronger and make sure I get some of my college film in front of me and work on getting my game to MLL speed as fast as possible.”
Gimour becomes the second Ironheads alumnus to be selected in the MLL Supplemental draft and the first since 2013 when netminder Angus Dinley was selected by Rochester.
