Starred at Division III Marian, where he finished his four-year career as the school’s second most prolific strikeout artist by fanning 188 hitters. Threw a seven-inning no-hitter in his sophomore season against Finlandia with 12 strikeouts. Came on as a junior with a 4-3 record in eight starts with a 3.07 ERA, striking out 61 batters in 58 2/3 innings with four complete games. Allowed only 51 hits and 23 walks. As a senior was 3-2 in eight starts, allowing just 42 hits in 51 innings, striking out 49, walking 29, with a 3.71 ERA.  Was Northwoods League All-Star with the Madison Mallards. Played also basketball as a center. Is a nephew of the late, great New York Yankees relief pitcher Ryne Duren. Went to Gibraltar High School.
