BIOGRAPHY: Chien-Ming Wang, 35 years of age, was born on March 30th, 1980 in Tainan City, Taiwan. Wang pitched for the national baseball team of Taiwan Chinese Taipei in the 2002 Asian Games. Wang is the fourth major leaguer from Taiwan, following Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Chin-Feng Chen, and pitcher Hong-Chih Kuo, and Colorado Rockies pitcher Chin-Hui Tsao.
PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Wang was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 2000. In his second big league season in 2006, Wang won 19 games, tied with Johan Santana for the most wins in the majors, while also posting a 3.63 ERA, and also limiting batters to a .211 batting average. After the 2006 season, Wang finished second behind Johan Santana in the Cy Young Award voting, while finishing first in in MLB.com’s “This Year in Baseball Awards,” as the top starter in 2006. Wang in 2007 finished second in the American League in wins with 19, third in win-loss percentage at .731, had the lowest HR/9 innings pitched ratio in the AL (0.41), and a perfect 1,000 fielding percentage. 2015 HIGHLIGHTS: Wang signed with the Atlanta Braves organization as a free agent, and was assigned to Triple-A Gwinnett. Wang went 2-6, with a 6.10 ERA in 11 games, and 10 starts in 62 innings pitched. He spent 5/13-5/20 on the disabled list with a left gluten strain, and then again 6/11-6/16 with a right groin strain.
