Joe played as a true freshman at Ave Maria University in his home state of Florida before coming to East Texas this summer. Bernhard made 12 appearances this spring, including one start, and struck out 15 batters over 17 innings.


Bernhard enjoyed a successful senior season on the mound at Flagler-Palm Coast High School in Florida. He maintained a 1.74 ERA over 40.1 innings and allowed just 10 earned runs on the season. 


Bernhard is the second consecutive Ave Maria product to pitch for the Pump Jacks. His current Ave Maria teammate, Ray Messner, pitched for the Pump Jacks last summer and ranked third on staff in innings pitched.
