As a redshirt freshman in 2015, Martinson made two appearances for a total of 3 1/3 innings with a 5.40 ERA. He made his collegiate debut at Richmond on March 17, where he pitched a third of an inning. He also tossed three innings in a start against St. John’s, striking out three, walking two and allowing four unearned runs on four hits on March 31.

The right-hander graduated from Minnetonka High School in 2013, playing for coach Paul Twenge. A 2013 all-state and All-Lake Conference selection, Martinson helped the Skippers advance to the semifinals of the 2013 Class 3A state tournament, where Minnetonka eventually finished in third place.
