A player in the midst of converting into a full-time pitcher, Wright has shown signs of promise during his two seasons with the University of Southern California Trojans. As a sophomore in 2015, Wright made three appearances out of the bullpen, striking out four batters in three innings of work. Aside from his time at USC, Wright pitched a game with the Peninsula Oilers of the Alaska Baseball League in 2014, where he posted a 1.80 ERA in five innings of work.

Before he emerged at USC, Wright starred as a pitcher and outfielder for Central Cathedral High School in San Diego, California. He helped the Dons win back-to-back state titles in 2012 and 2013, while also garnering numerous accolades, such as 2013 California All-Region and Second Team All-American. Wright also pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers Area Code and the Pro Scout All-Star teams in 2012.
