VanAsselberg joins the Bluefish after a four-year stint as Field Manager of the Grand Prairie Air Hogs of the independent American Association. During his time with Grand Prairie, he led the team to a 177-135 record, including an American Association Championship and league best record of 64-36 in 2011 and a Division Championship in 2013.

Prior to his time with the Air Hogs, the Louisiana-native made his American Association managerial debut with the Shreveport-Bossier Captains in 2009. In his two seasons as manager of Shreveport-Bossier, he led the team to a 112-87 record, including an American Association Championship in 2010.

Ricky made his managerial debut in 2006 as a member of the Alexandria Aces of the independent United League. During his three years with the club, he made it to the United League Championship series all three seasons, taking home the Championship in 2006 and 2007. He was also named Manager of the Year during both Championship seasons.

VanAsselberg had a seven-year playing career as a catcher and corner infielder (1996-2002) before moving to coaching and managing. He made his debut with the Alexandria Aces, then after a brief stint with Rookie-level Bluefield, a Baltimore Orioles affiliate of the Appalachian League in 1997, he spent the rest of his time in the independent ranks with Alexandria and Springfield/Ozark of the Texas-Louisiana League and Rio Grand Valley of the Central League.
