Sawyer has established himself as one of the top players in the Summit League and was named the top Canadian college baseball player by CanadianBaseballNetwork.com following the 2009 season. He belted 19 homeruns last year and compiled 148 total bases, both new team records, earning him the team’s “Greg Geary Big Stick Award.” He also led the team with 61 runs scored, 58 RBI, a .701 slugging percentage and 30 walks, which earned him First Team All-Summit League honours.
Sawyer posted 22 multi-hit games in 2009 and hit nine homeruns over the course of an eight game stretch. During his 2009 season Sawyer received a number of accolades including being named to the National All-Star Line-up, National co-hitter of the week and Central Region player of the week.
Defensively Sawyer recorded a .949 fielding percentage in 2009, in nearly 200 total chances. He began the season at first place, but quickly showed the ability to play at third.
Sawyer was 7 for 17 and batted .412 during South Dakota State’s playoff tournament and earned All-Tournament recognition.
Sawyer attended the Canadian National Junior team tryout at Disneyworld in 2005 and represented Canada at the Little League World Series in 2001. He will be the first Falcon in franchise history to have completed at the Little League World Series.
