Gaughan is playing in his fourth winter league season, having played in the Arizona Winter League the previous two years and the Texas Winter League in 2013, where he hit .224 as an infielder and collected a clutch save in his only pitching appearance, retiring all four batters he faced with one strikeout. Made his professional debut in the Pecos League with Raton Osos in 2013, pitching in 11 games with no decisions and a 5.51 ERA in 16 1/3 innings, allowing 23 hits, striking out 12, and walking six.  Played collegiately at NAIA Point Park University and attended Mississippi Valley State. Played in the Western Major Baseball League, a summer college league, posting batting averages of .270 in 2008 and .319 in 2009. For NAIA Point Park in 2008, Gaughan hit a robust .372 with a home run and 18 RBIs while leading the Pioneers with a .500 on base percentage and 19 walks. Also hit 7 doubles and scored 21 runs in 33 games, posting a .988 OPS while registering an impressive .953 fielding percentage as an infielder. The following season he hit .281 (18-64) for Point Park, with one home run, one double, nine walks, and 10 RBIs. His high school career highlight playing for Class AAAA Baldwin High School in Baldwin, Pa. came on May 3, 2006, when his single to left in the eighth inning drove in the winning run in a 7-6 victory against Upper St. Clair, who were the top ranked team in Western Pennsylvania by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at the time. Mother was a fixture at Pirates games at Three Rivers Stadium in the ‘90’s, wearing a shirt that read “Sean’s Mom,” thus catching the eye of Bucs’ pitcher Chris Peters, who would later coach Gaughn at PPU.
