A native of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Wine was drafted out of Penn State University by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 38th round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft. In his only season with the Gulf Coast Phillies, the slender six-foot-five first baseman appeared in 34 games batting .189 with 2 doubles while driving in 7 runs, in 74 official plate appearances. But don’t be confused by his rookie numbers because as a senior Nittany Lion, Wine batted a career-best .307 with five homeruns and 41 RBI and during his junior year in 2008, Wine posted a .431 slugging percentage and six homeruns and went on eight and nine-game hitting streaks. In 2007, he started all but one game as a sophomore and collected 52 hits, five homeruns, four triples and 26 RBI. He also led the team with 29 walks. As a freshman in 2006, he batted .306 and set a single season record for putouts (419). Wine is a third-generation baseball player as his grandfather, Bobby, played for the Philadelphia Phillies, is currently an advanced scout for the Atlanta Braves and has spent over 40 years in professional baseball.
