Now a sophomore at the University of San Francisco, Chavez was the Dons only two-way player as a freshman. He started one game on the mound and pitched in 14 others, having tossed 17 innings while striking out 11. Chavez made his collegiate pitching debut at Riverside and did not allow a run (2/28). He earned a no-decision in his first collegiate start at no. 13 Cal Poly (5/3), and started eight games and played in 26 total. Chavez batted .286 with six doubles, a triple, 14 RBI, and one stolen base. He made his collegiate debut and had his first hit at Riverside (2/26). Bay Sox General Manager Kirk Fredriksson said, “According to [USF] Head Coach Nino Giarratano, Chavez has got more power than anyone else there. He’ll work in the bullpen and of the mound for us, while also sometimes playing the outfield. He should be a valuable asset to our team.” Before USF, Chavez played four years of baseball at Burlingame High School. As a senior, he earned Player of the Year, MVP, and First-Team All County accolades.
