Gomez comes to the Mainers after his first year at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. As a freshman he made 18 appearances and had a 3.00 ERA. He led the Retrievers in strikeouts with 41; 17 more than the next. He also has the second lowest opposing batting average on his team with a .245 which is just .001 more than the leader of this category.Before becoming a Retriever, he helped the Don Bosco Ironmen win the Bergen County Championship in his junior season. He was also named an honorable mention on the All-State squad in his home state, New Jersey.
