As a freshman at Hartford, Touhey played in all 49 games and started in 47. He batted just .155 with 3 doubles and 1 home run in his first collegiate season. He still came around to score 23 runs, drive in 11 RBI and draw 12 walks for the Hawks.
Touhey played three seasons of baseball at Florence High School before missing his senior season with an injury. Through his junior year, Touhey batted .475 with 126 hits, three home runs, nine triples and 45 doubles while driving in 73 RBI. He also had 10 wins on the mound with a 1.81 ERA in 84 innings with 107 strikeouts. Touhey was named two-time Arizona Sports Network All-State and second-team Arizona Sports Network All-State as a freshman, as well as being given an honorary spot on the first-team all-state his senior year despite the injury. He was also named to the Arizona Republic first-team all-state and Arizona Baseball Coaches first-team all-state as a junior.
