Hochstatter was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 47th Round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, but opted to attend Stanford University instead, where he made 11 appearances, nine as a starter, and was 3-3 with a 3.80 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 42.2 innings pitched.

Last summer, Hochstatter pitched for USA Baseball’s Under-18 National Team, where he went 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA and 10 strikeouts over 11.1 innings of work in seven appearances. Hochstatter was named an All-Star in the Hawaii Collegiate Summer League in the summer prior to his freshman year in 2011, recording a 4.64 ERA with 23 strikeouts over 33.0 innings of work in eight appearances with five starts.

Hochstatter was a three-year letterman in baseball, playing his final two years at San Ramon Valley High School where he was named team captain. Hochstatter was named a Rawlings All-Region selection and First Team All-State as a senior.
