Raines, Jr. is once again reunited with his father, Bears manager Tim Raines, who played with his son in the major leagues in 2001 with the Baltimore Orioles and who he has managed in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Raines, Jr. was drafted in the sixth round of the 1998 MLB Draft by the Orioles and spent several seasons with the organization, including parts of three seasons with the Orioles (2001, 2003 and 2004). Raines, Jr. batted .213 with seven RBI in 75 MLB games over the three years. Raines, Jr. has been a fine minor league player, compiling a career batting average of .271 over 13 seasons at all levels of minor league baseball. His best season came in 2008, when he batted .311 with 18 homers and 78 RBI for Tucson in the Pacific Coast League (Class AAA) for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ organization. Raines, Jr. has also played in the Washington Nationals, Houston Astros and Kansas City Royals organizations. Raines, Jr. played in only four games for the Bears to start the 2009 season and split the 2010 season between Somerset and Newark in the Atlantic League. Raines, Jr. flourished playing for his father, batting an astounding .367 with five homers and 22 RBI in just 38 games with Newark. He should be a major cog at the top of the Bears’ batting order this season.
