Josh Bates made an impact in the Tulane University starting rotation this spring season as a freshman. In his first weekend start, Bates struck out a career-high nine batters against conference foe Houston over 6.1 innings of work. He followed this impressive start by tossing another six innings in his very next outing; a win against East Tennessee State in which Bates struck out four, surrendering four hits and one earned run.

Bates attended Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando, Florida where he was given the team’s Cy Young Award after his junior and senior seasons. Bates set the school record for strikeouts in a game with 16 and pitched back-to-back no-hitters as a junior. Bates completed his senior season going 9-1, helping Bishop Moore to a 5A state runner up finish while holding a 1.21 era, and striking out 112 strikeouts in 70 innings pitched.
