Lutner finished his sophomore season at Villanova with 22.2 innings pitched, recording 12 strikeouts. Lutner appeared in 19 games his freshman season recording a 4.38 ERA through 37.0 innings. In his first 15 games in relief as a freshman, Lutner pitched 23.0 innings while recording an ERA of 3.13. In the summer of 2016, Lutner pitched for the South Jersey Giants of the Atlantic Collegiate League. As a Giant, Lutner went 1-3 with a 5.08 ERA and recorded 16 strikeouts.

Before attending Villanova, Lutner attended Timber Creek High School where he earned a 7-0 record with an ERA of 1.79 and 62 strikeouts. Lutner was named All-Olympic Conference as both a shortstop and a pitcher. Former Gull and Villanova teammate Hunter Schryver described Lutner as a “hard worker who comes in and gets the job done.”
