The Kansas City Monarchs acquired RHP Wilmer Torres from Tri-City (Frontier League) on May 20, 2021. Torres, 24, last pitched in 2018 for the Arizona LeaguePadres. In two innings, the right-hander surrendered two runs with four walks and one strikeout.
Torres has come out of the bullpen for the majority of his professional career. Of his 51 appearances, onlytwo of them have been starts, which came in 2015. Torres’s best season came in 2017, when he played forfour of the Padres’ affiliates. At just 21 years of age, Torres worked from A-ball to Double-A — logging a3.24 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 33 ⅓ innings. Walks, however, have always been an issue for Torres in the
minor leagues. In 2016, Torres walked 5.4 hitters per nine over 21 ⅔ innings. In that 2017 season, inwhich he recorded a career-high in innings, the righty walked almost five batters per nine.
On the other hand, Torres does a good job of keeping the ball in the park. Over 71 ⅔ career innings, he’sallowed 0.3 HR/9.
