Playing for the University of Miami Diaz saw action in 13 games as defensive replacement. However he did not record a hit in 10 at bat. Before Miami he played at Grandview Preparatory School. Diaz earned recognition for defensive skill behind the plate and was selected to Rawlings Preseason All-America Canada/Puerto Rico Region First Team. He earned 2012 Perfect Game Underclass Honorable Mention All-America honors after junior season.
