The 2012 Metro Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Year, Rider University right-hander Mike Murphy will bring his talents to the Berkshires and will be a candidate for the starting rotation this summer.
One year removed from a six-win campaign that saw him total nearly 100 innings of work, Murphy has been just as good this spring, entering the final weekend of the regular season with a 6-4 record on a 3.69 ERA and a 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The Broncs have already eclipsed the 30-win plateau and are poised to make a deep tournament run when the postseason begins in late May. Murphy went 5-1 in eight conference starts in 2012 to earn the MAAC’s top pitching honors.
The 2011-12 Rider Athlete of the Year, Murphy’s dominance as a sophomore was even more impressive considering the fact that he was coming off Tommy John Surgery that cost him the entire 2011 campaign. His mother, Bonnie, was a high school All-American field hockey player. Murphy is pursing a major in business administration at Rider.
