| Derek Brooks has been added to Jake Martin’s coaching staff for the 2013 season. Brooks will be the pitching coach for the Rafters this summer, taking over for Chad Lee, who is now a scout with the Kansas City Royals organization. Brooks spent his first season as an assistant coach at Emporia State University this past spring. Brooks brings both playing and coaching experience to the Rafters staff. He was an infielder and pitcher at Odessa Junior College from 2009-2010 before finishing his collegiate career at Emporia State University from 2011-2012, where he was exclusively a pitcher. As a senior, he posted 6-3 record with a 4.58 ERA. In 70.2 innings pitched, he struck out 51 batters, while only allowing 13 walks. His 12 starts ranked him first on the Emporia State team in 2012. Brooks is no stranger to summer collegiate baseball, having spent the summer of 2011 as a member of the Fayetteville Swamp Dogs in the Coastal Plains League. Brooks appeared in 13 games (8 starts) for the Swamp Dogs, and posted a 7-1 record with a sparkling 2.48 ERA. His ERA was the 9th best mark in the Coastal Plains League that summer. In 61.2 innings, he allowed only 14 walks while striking out 42. Brooks graduated from Emporia State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in BIS Interdisciplinary Studies in 2013. He is a 2008 graduate of Baytown Sterling High School, where he was a four-year letter winner in baseball. Brooks, the son of former major leaguer Trey Brooks, is a native of Baytown, Texas. | |||||||
