Kaplan is familiar with Sioux Falls, playing two prior seasons at the Birdcage in 2005 and 2006. He hit .257 in 41 games in 2005 but was limited to just seven games in 2006. He comes off his finest season to date with the Calgary Vipers. Kaplan was among the North American Baseball League leaders with a blistering .368 batting average and 125 hits in 82 games. He swatted 29 doubles and stole 25 bases.

Kaplan finished in the top five league leaders for batting average, runs, stolen bases, doubles, triples and extra-base hits.  Demonstrating thorough plate coverage, he struck out just 46 times in 381 plate appearances, helping him reach base at a .432 clip.

A 2003 draft pick of Arizona Diamondbacks, Kaplan played in their farm system and briefly with the St. Louis Cardinals before joining independent baseball in 2005. He is a career .295 hitter with 44 home runs, 278 RBI and 187 stolen bases over nine seasons. He earned all-conference honors while playing at Tulane University.
