A fourth-round selection by the Chicago White Sox out of Mill Creek High School in Georgia, Grimes arrives in Wareham as one of the most touted freshman arms in the country.
At the beginning of his rookie campaign in Georgia Tech this spring, the southpaw got off to a powerful start, opening the season with a 5-2 record in 10 appearances (nine starts). He posted a 4.01 ERA and struck out 48 against 20 walks and 50 hits in 49.1 innings of work.
At Mill Creek, Grimes was considered one of the top 250 prospects in the country and 20th-best in Georgia, according to Perfect Game Crosschecker. One of just four pitchers in Gwinnett County history record 100 strikeouts in a single season, he was named the Gwinnett County Pitcher of the Year after recording a 1.32 ERA for his entire senior season.
He also played two years of varsity basketball at Mill Creek, and his father, Damon, played hoops at Western Kentucky University.
Grimes intends to major in Management at Georgia Tech.
