The lefty from Louisville did not disappoint pitching in front of his hometown fans as a freshman. Schmeltz made 12 appearances for the Cardinals, finishing the year with a 3.86 ERA while striking out 10 in 9.1 innings pitched. His best outing came against Indiana, striking out the side in one inning of work. Schmeltz lettered four years at Pleasure Ridge Park High School and was ranked as the No. 9 overall player in the state of Kentucky according to Perfect Game. Schmeltz becomes the third straight left-handed pitcher to join the Gulls after Gavin Sullivan and Michael Kirian called the City by the Sea home in 2018.
