Malatesta is a four-year player at Oxford High School. Malatesta played in the 2009 Crossroads Diamond Club High School All-Star Game and finished the season with an 11-0 record. His era stood at 2.16 in 64.2 innings. He gave up just 26 runs on 43 hits, with 22 walks and 88 strikeouts.
 

Phillip is the son of Larry and Susanne Malatesta. He is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, Mu Alpha Theta and the OHS Honor Roll. He won the U.S. Achievement Academy National Leadership and Service Award and was named Student of the Month and is a Distinguished Alumni Congressional Youth Leadership Council nominee.
