Leo Pina returns to the RedHawks for his fourth season at Newman Outdoor Field and 11th season of professional baseball. Pina played all 60 games for the RedHawks in 2020, hitting .275/.316/.377 with 65 hits, 32 RBIs, and six home runs. His 2020 highlight was a two-home run, three-RBI game — including an inside-the-park home run, which is believed to be the second hit by a RedHawks player at Newman Outdoor Field — on Sept. 3 against the Sioux Falls Canaries in an 8-6 win at Newman Outdoor Field. The 2019 American Association All-Star and Home Run Derby runner-up has appeared in 254 games for the RedHawks over three seasons (2018-20), tied for 17th on the F-M all-time games played list, and can move into the top ten if he appears in 59 games this season. Pina is the highest-ranking active RedHawks player in games played, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, and RBIs.
Pina made his debut with the Dominican Summer League Cardinals in 2011 after signing with the St. Louis organization as an undrafted international free agent. He played 455 games over the span of seven seasons in the Cardinals organization, reaching the Double-A level in 2017 with Springfield, before being released in 2017. Pina originally signed with the RedHawks on April 13, 2018. In 2019, He hit .323/.386/.492 and finished fourth in the AA in batting average with 119 hits, 28 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 53 runs scored. Pina rattled off hitting streaks of 15 and 21 games, respectively, during the 2019 season and started all five games of the North Division Championship Series against St. Paul.
