Whitby wins tough contest against Brantford, 4-2

The Whitby Dunlops and the Brantford Blast were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Whitby made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-2.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Scott Freeman's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

With the win, the Dunlops evened the series at 2-2 in the best of seven showdown.

Whitby got the win behind a great game by Freeman, who had one goal and two assists. Freeman scored on the power play 12:32 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Whitby. The Dunlops had gained a power play chance when Jeff Caister was whistled for delay of game. Peter MacKellar assisted on the tally.

Whitby pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 33 penalty minutes.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 17:13 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

Brantford was unable to stop the Dunlops from sending pucks towards the net, and Whitby eventually piled up 31 shots on goal.

Whitby also got points from MacKellar, who also racked up one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Whitby included Matthew Baxter and Adam Van Dam, who each put in one. In addition, Whitby received assists from Patrick Jobb, who had one and Corey Tamblyn, who had two.

The Blast were helped by Mike Burgoyne, who finished with one goal. Burgoyne scored on the power play 18:09 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Brantford. Brantford had taken the advantage when the Dunlops' Kyle Ventura got sent off for too many men. Cameron Sault picked up the assist. Brantford also got a goal from Brandon Dietrich as well. More assists for Brantford came via Derek Medeiros and Joel Prpic, who contributed one each.

Whitby's Jason Guy stopped 22 shots out of the 24 that he faced. The Dunlops registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Whitby ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ventura was ejected from the game. Anthony Marshall made 27 saves for the Blast on 30 shots. Brantford totaled 43 minutes in penalty time with nine minors and one major and went 1-for-6 on the power play. For the Blast, Dietrich and Prpic were ejected from the contest.
