Brantford hangs on, beats Whitby 6-4

The Brantford Blast beat the Whitby Dunlops, 6-4, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Mark Taylor provided Brantford with the game-winning tally when he scored 19:58 into the first period. Ryan McCarthy picked up the assist.

The win by the Blast broke a deadlock and gave Brantford a 2-1 advantage in the best of seven series.

Mike Burgoyne had two goals to lead the Blast to victory. Burgoyne found the back of the net 3:31 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Brantford and again while on the power play 16:09 into the second to make the score 5-3 Brantford.

Brantford's penalty kill excelled, as the Blast gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays.

Whitby was unable to stop Brantford from sending pucks towards the net, and the Blast eventually piled up 50 shots on goal. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Brantford additionally got points from Dustin Alcock, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Joel Prpic, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Brantford also got a goal from Derek Medeiros as well. In addition, Brantford received assists from Jamie Williams, who had two and Dave Russell, Chris Rebernik, Brandon Dietrich, Jeff Caister, and Anthony Marshall, who each chipped in one.

The Dunlops forced Brantford goalie Marshall to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

Whitby was helped by Brett McConnachie, who had one goal. McConnachie scored on the power play 15:17 into the second period to make the score 4-3 Brantford. The Dunlops had gotten the advantage when the Blast's Dietrich was sent off for boarding. Darren Doherty assisted on the tally. Whitby also got points from Doherty, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Whitby included Patrick Jobb and Kyle Ventura, who scored one goal each. More assists for Whitby came via Shane Terry, who had one.

Anthony Marshall made 32 saves for Brantford on 36 shots. The Blast incurred 38 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Whitby's Jason Guy stopped 44 shots out of the 50 that he faced. The Dunlops incurred 36 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
