Aylmer survives Thamesford comeback, wins 5-3

The Aylmer Spitfires, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by the Thamesford Trojans and clinched a 5-3 victory.

Aylmer led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Spitfires' Jesse Tottle scored at 16:27 in the second period to put Aylmer up 4-1.

The win gave the Spitfires a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Josh Lockhart was all over the ice for Aylmer, as he racked up two goals in the win. Lockhart scored at 6:42 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Aylmer and again while 5:49 into the third to make the score 5-3 Aylmer.

The Spitfires put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Thamesford to score on any of its five power plays. Aylmer forced the Trojans goalie Tyler Gubesch to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

Aylmer additionally got points from Luke Bettencourt, who also had one goal and one assist and Tottle, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Ryan Van Roestel also scored for Aylmer. In addition, Aylmer received assists from Kyle DiCicco, Jake Morin, Ryan Vandenbroek, Cody Underhill, and Jesiah Sweetland, who contributed one each.

Thamesford stifled the Spitfires' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Trojans' offense rang up 32 shots on Aylmer's net.

Thamesford was helped by Michael Nutt, who registered one goal. Nutt scored 19:32 into the second period to make the score 4-3 Aylmer. Matthew Smallman picked up the assist. Thamesford also got points from Dakota Hill, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Thamesford also got a goal from Joey Wright as well. Other players who recorded assists for Thamesford were Ian Burdett, who had one.

Andrew Harriman-Duke rejected 29 shots on goal for the Spitfires. Aylmer incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Tyler Gubesch made 31 saves for the Trojans on 36 shots. Thamesford incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. The Trojans ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Stavros Mandrapilias was ejected from the game.
