M1 Illinois ^ University of vanquishes M1 Western Michigan University in shootout, 4-3 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the M1 Illinois ^ University of Fighting Illini defeated the M1 Western Michigan University Stallions in a shootout 4-3 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured five attempts between both teams.

M1 Illinois ^ University of came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Fighting Illini fell behind 2-0 after a goal by M1 Western Michigan University's Jacob Taiariol at 18:16 in the first period. M1 Illinois ^ University of knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by James Mcging at 3:22 in the third period.

The Fighting Illini were led by Grant Stueve, who had one goal and one assist. Stueve scored on the power play 8:11 into the second period to make the score 2-2. A cross checking penalty on Matt Shultz had put M1 Illinois ^ University of on the power play. Eric Cruickshank provided the assist.

The Fighting Illini put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Stallions to score on any of their three power plays. M1 Illinois ^ University of put 40 shots on net during the contest, more than the 0.5 it averages per game.

M1 Illinois ^ University of also got a goal from John Olen as well. More assists for M1 Illinois ^ University of came via Eric Saulters, who had two.

M1 Western Michigan University forced the Fighting Illini goalie Joe Olen to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. The Stallions could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 18 minutes in penalties during the game.

Richard Zehnal also scored for M1 Western Michigan University. In addition, M1 Western Michigan University received assists from Cole Kapovich, who had two and Colin Tittle, Jesse Cameron, and Matthew Williams, who each chipped in one.

M1 Illinois ^ University of's Olen stopped 33 shots out of the 36 that he faced. The Fighting Illini incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Will Massey made 36 saves for M1 Western Michigan University on 39 shots.
