Springfield uses big second period to beat Marple Newtown, 10-1IceLine Rink 4 Mon, Jan 18, 2016 Springfield scored seven goals in the second period to pull away from Marple Newtown and clinch a 10-1 win. Tyler Riddle had four goals and three assists to lead Springfield. Riddle's first goal came 2:17 into the first period. He then added goals at 9:46 into the second, at 15:49 into the second, and at 8:13 into the third. Marple Newtown was doomed by its poor performance on special teams, as Springfield was able to score four times while on the power play. Springfield's offense rang up 34 shots on Marple Newtown's net. Springfield also got points from Andrew Astrino, who also grabbed one goal and six assists, Kevin Brown, who also finished with two goals and two assists, and Joseph Cavaliere, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Springfield also had goals scored by Jim Schickling and Aidan Smith, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Springfield were Jacob Zappo, who had one and Mark Rodgers, who had two. Springfield's defense shut down Marple Newtown's forwards for much of the game, and Marple Newtown got off only 14 shots during the contest. Marple Newtown was led by Ian Malarick, who scored the team's only goal. Malarick scored 10 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-1. Matthew Merrone provided the assist. Michael Gerzabek made 13 saves for Springfield on 14 shots. Springfield incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors. Marple Newtown's Drew Moore stopped 24 shots out of the 34 that he faced. Marple Newtown incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors and had no power play opportunities.
