Marple Newtown holds on for 6-5 win against Harriton

Marple Newtown survived a determined comeback attempt by Harriton on the way to a 6-5 win.

Marple Newtown made the score 6-3 on a goal by Matthew Merrone at 2:25 in the third period, and Harriton got as close as 6-5 when Sam Kirby scored 10:44 into the third period.

Merrone was all over the ice for Marple Newtown, as he had four goals in the win. Merrone's first goal came 15:52 into the first period. He then added goals at 6:21 into the second and at 33 seconds into the third.

Marple Newtown found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Marple Newtown averages 2.9 goals per game. Marple Newtown's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Marple Newtown finished with 34 penalty minutes.

Marple Newtown additionally got points from Anthony Giacobetti, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Anthony Patrone, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. In addition, Marple Newtown received assists from Gabe Ceroli, who had two and Ian Malarick and Max DiCola, who contributed one each.

Harriton's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.

Harriton was led by Nick Wert, who registered two goals and two assists. Wert scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 9:47 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Marple Newtown. Harriton earned a power play opportunity when Patrone was put in the box for tripping. Kirby picked up the assist. Wert's next tally on the power play made the score 6-4 Marple Newtown with 16:24 left in the third period. Albert Bleznak provided the assist. Harriton also got points from Kirby, who also racked up two goals and one assist and Jake Gross, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Harriton came via Joonas Knuutinen, who had one.

Drew Moore rejected 15 shots on goal for Marple Newtown. Marple Newtown registered three goals on six power play opportunities. Harriton's Rebekah Weissinger stopped 20 shots out of the 26 that he faced. Harriton incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
