M1 Niagara University uses shootout to best M1 Cortland State University of NY, 5-4 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the M1 Niagara University Purple Eagles defeated the M1 Cortland State University of NY Red Dragons in a shootout 5-4 (2-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for four attempts between the teams. M1 Niagara University's other shootout goal was scored by Josh Pietrantonio.

Dalton Bew had two goals and one assist to lead the Purple Eagles. Bew scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 15:12 into the second period to make the score 3-2 M1 Niagara University. M1 Niagara University had gained a power play chance when Thomas Tirelli was whistled for slashing. Pietrantonio picked up the assist. Bew's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 M1 Niagara University with 13:00 left in the third period. The Purple Eagles earned a power play opportunity when Taylor Traenkle was put in the box for too many men. Pietrantonio provided the assist.

M1 Niagara University pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 38 penalty minutes.

The Purple Eagles kept M1 Cortland State University of NY's goalie busy throughout the game, and Elliott Messmer made 43 saves on 48 shots.

M1 Niagara University additionally got points from Pietrantonio, who also finished with one goal and two assists. M1 Niagara University also got a goal from Nick Smith as well. In addition, M1 Niagara University received assists from Andrew Mitch and Patrick Gregory, who each chipped in one.

With 31 shots on target during the contest, the Red Dragons exceeded the 0.4 shots they average per game this year. M1 Cortland State University of NY could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Red Dragons were led by Nathan Woznak, who registered one goal and two assists. Woznak scored on the power play 11:31 into the second period to make the score 2-1 M1 Niagara University. A cross checking penalty on Austin Wharry had put M1 Cortland State University of NY on the power play. Daniel Nelson assisted on the tally. M1 Cortland State University of NY also got points from Nelson, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Andrew Bourdeau, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Michael Gioia also scored for M1 Cortland State University of NY. Other players who recorded assists for M1 Cortland State University of NY were Jack Travers and Michael Whelan, who contributed one each.

Mike Parda made 27 saves for M1 Niagara University on 31 shots. The Purple Eagles registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. The Red Dragons registered one goal on eight power play opportunities.
