Early goals doom M1 Slippery Rock University, falls to M1 West Virginia University, 6-1

The M1 Slippery Rock University Pride fell behind early, and the M1 West Virginia University Mountaineers kept piling on the points on the way to a 6-1 victory.

M1 Slippery Rock University was stymied by M1 West Virginia University's netminder Benjamin Zienty, who stopped 30 shots during the victory. Zienty certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.03 entering the contest.

The Mountaineers were led by Eric Keefe, who racked up one goal and one assist. Keefe scored on the power play 3:25 into the first period to make the score 2-0 M1 West Virginia University. M1 West Virginia University had gotten the advantage when the Pride's Scott Vogelgesang was sent off for hooking. Tyler Collard picked up the assist.

The Mountaineers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. M1 West Virginia University found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Mountaineers have scored at the pace of 3.6 goals per game during the current campaign. The defensemen of M1 West Virginia University were also effective in M1 Slippery Rock University's zone, and came away with two goals. By firing 53 shots on goal, the Mountaineers exceeded the 0.4 shots they average per game this year.

Others who scored for M1 West Virginia University included Vincent Fornes, Riley Horvath, Frankie Gerbasi, Nicholas Burt, and Jess Bartholow, who each put in one. More assists for M1 West Virginia University came via Jp Sawyer, Kyle Dolly, Austin Crane, James Murray, and Tyler Conaway, who contributed one each.

The Pride did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. M1 Slippery Rock University averages 4.5 goals per game. M1 West Virginia University was unable to stop the Pride from sending pucks towards the net, and M1 Slippery Rock University eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. The Pride struggled on the penalty kill, allowing the Mountaineers to score two power play goals on three chances.

M1 Slippery Rock University took out Sami-Pekka Ansio after he had made 45 saves and installed Patrick Spaulding in goal, where he finished with two saves and the loss. The Pride incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
