Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the M1 Kent State University Golden Flashes defeated M1 Illinois State University in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured six attempts between both teams. M1 Illinois State University got a shootout goal from Kyle Melton. M1 Kent State University's other shootout goal was scored by Jake Hainline.

The Golden Flashes saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. M1 Kent State University made the score 4-2 on a power play goal by Chad Parise at 19:48 in the second period. M1 Illinois State University evened things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Mason Rosenberg at 14:43 in the third period.

The Golden Flashes were led by Andrew Radosevic, who racked up one goal. Radosevic scored on the power play 10:27 into the second period to make the score 2-2. M1 Kent State University had taken the advantage when M1 Illinois State University's Tim Talty got sent off for slashing. Miles Radosevic assisted on the tally.

Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals. M1 Illinois State University put 32 shots on net during the contest, more than the 24.9 it averages per game.
