Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the M1 Kent State University Golden Flashes defeated the M1 Duquesne University Dukes in a shootout 4-3 (1-0 SO).

M1 Kent State University saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Golden Flashes made the score 3-1 on a goal by Jake Hainline at 18:17 in the second period. M1 Duquesne University evened things up at 3-3 on a goal by Zak Kindya at 13:32 in the third period.

M1 Kent State University put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Dukes to score on any of their five power plays. The Golden Flashes forced M1 Duquesne University goalie Michael Dginto to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots.

M1 Kent State University was helped by Jared Fielden, who registered one goal. Fielden scored 6:37 into the first period to make the score 1-0 M1 Kent State University. Curtis Swan provided the assist. Casey Barile also scored for M1 Kent State University.
