Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the M1 Western Michigan University Stallions defeated the M1 Kent State University Golden Flashes in a shootout 4-3 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams. M1 Kent State University's shootout goal was scored by Tj West. M1 Western Michigan University also got a shootout goal from Richard Zehnal.

The Stallions came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. M1 Western Michigan University fell behind 3-2 after a goal by the Golden Flashes' Jonathon Buttitta at 11:50 in the second period. The Stallions knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by Jared Vincek at 6:56 in the third period.

M1 Western Michigan University also got points from Jesse Cameron, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Joey Olmsted also scored for M1 Western Michigan University. Other players who recorded assists for M1 Western Michigan University were Colin Tittle, Cole Kapovich, Zach Roberts, Zach Mudge, and Matthew Williams, who contributed one each.

M1 Kent State University kept M1 Western Michigan University's goalie busy throughout the game, and Brandon Haase made 32 saves on 35 shots.

The Golden Flashes were helped by West, who grabbed one goal. West scored on the power play 5:00 into the second period to make the score 2-1 M1 Kent State University. M1 Kent State University had gotten the advantage when the Stallions' Williams was sent off for elbowing. Buttitta picked up the assist.
