M1 West Virginia University beats M1 Slippery Rock University 3-2 after comeback scare

The M1 Slippery Rock University Pride tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the M1 West Virginia University Mountaineers held on for a 3-2 victory.

A goal by Austin Crane put M1 West Virginia University up 3-1 in the second period, but M1 Slippery Rock University pulled to within one on Thomas Kimmick's tally 8:59 into the third period.

The Mountaineers' penalty kill excelled, as M1 West Virginia University gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

The Mountaineers stifled the Pride's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. M1 West Virginia University's offense was clicking better than usual and put 46 shots on goal during the game, better than the 1.0 shot per game it averages. The Mountaineers' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as M1 West Virginia University finished with 24 penalty minutes.

M1 West Virginia University also had goals scored by Jp Sawyer and Riley Horvath, who each put in one. More assists for M1 West Virginia University came via Eric Keefe, Gerard Clayton, and Tyler Conaway, who contributed one each.

M1 Slippery Rock University was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 16 penalty minutes. By firing 40 shots on goal, the Pride exceeded the 0.2 shots they average per game this year.

In addition, M1 Slippery Rock University received assists from Joseph Bender and Matthew Vicinie, who each chipped in one.

Benjamin Zienty made 38 saves for the Mountaineers on 40 shots. M1 West Virginia University registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Patrick Spaulding rejected 43 shots on goal for M1 Slippery Rock University.
