M1 Rutgers University survives M1 Villanova University comeback, wins 5-4

The M1 Rutgers University Scarlet Knights came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the M1 Villanova University Wildcats, but did just enough to escape with a 5-4 victory.

M1 Rutgers University led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Scarlet Knights' David Stickle scored at 17:00 in the first period to put M1 Rutgers University up 3-0.

The Scarlet Knights were paced by Ned Richard, who grabbed one goal. Richard scored 5:15 into the third period to make the score 5-3 M1 Rutgers University. Wesley Austin assisted on the tally.

In a losing effort, M1 Villanova University was led by Nicholas Schultz, who registered two goals and one assist. Schultz scored the first of his two goals short handed at 15:25 into the second period to make the score 3-2 M1 Rutgers University. The Wildcats were on a disadvantage when Dillon McCourt went off the ice for tripping. McCourt picked up the assist. Schultz's next tally short handed made the score 5-4 M1 Rutgers University with 4:39 left in the third period. John Skaggs assisted on the tally.

M1 Rutgers University excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. The Scarlet Knights put 42 shots on net during the contest, more than the 4.5 they average per game.

M1 Rutgers University also got points from Kevin Fitch, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for M1 Rutgers University included Kevin Crehan and CJ Maksut, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for M1 Rutgers University were Brian Gnad, who had three and Cody Berquist and Tyler Rule, who contributed one each.

By firing 29 shots on goal, M1 Villanova University exceeded the 0.4 shots it averages per game this year. The Wildcats struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 16 penalty minutes for seven opposing power plays.

M1 Villanova University also had goals scored by David Troiano and James Kirchgraber, who scored one goal each. More assists for M1 Villanova University came via John J Gyurina and Troy Donahue, who each chipped in one.

Thomas Marigliano took the win and made 10 saves before being replaced by Christopher Marsillo who made seven saves. M1 Rutgers University incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. M1 Villanova University took out Nicholas Desimone after he had made 16 saves and installed Michael Harper in goal, where he finished with 21 saves and the loss.
