Huntsville uses shootout to best Fayetteville, 4-3 (2-0 SO)

The Huntsville Havoc and the Fayetteville FireAntz both failed to score in overtime, but Huntsville won the game 4-3 (2-0 SO) after Jeff Jones's deciding goal in the shootout.

The shootout lasted for eight attempts between the teams. In addition to the clincher, the Havoc got a shootout goal from Jones.

Huntsville saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Havoc made the score 3-1 on a goal by Scott Henegar at 7:01 in the second period. Fayetteville evened things up at 3-3 on a goal by Brad Drobot at 19:52 in the third period.

Huntsville was sparked by Jones, who had one goal. Jones scored 4:49 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Huntsville. Dylan Nowakowski assisted on the tally.

The Havoc racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and three majors for 37 minutes in penalty time. Huntsville had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Havoc put 31 shots on net during the contest, more than the 22.2 they average per game.

Huntsville was helped by Jones, who registered one goal. Huntsville additionally got points from Joshua Ranalli, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. More assists for Huntsville came via Justin Tateson, Stuart Stefan, Taylor Bourne, and John McGinnis, who each chipped in one.

The FireAntz forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 26 minutes in penalty time. Fayetteville surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. The FireAntz stifled the Havoc's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. By firing 35 shots on goal, Fayetteville exceeded the 23.9 shots it averages per game this year.

The FireAntz were helped by Tayler Thompson, who finished with one goal. Thompson scored on the power play 6:06 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Fayetteville had taken the advantage when Huntsville's Nick Schneider got sent off for clipping. Alex Brooks picked up the assist. Fayetteville also got points from Drobot, who also had one goal and one assist. Fayetteville also got a goal from Nick Lazorko as well. In addition, Fayetteville received assists from Kyle Gibbons, Chris Porter, and Josh McQuade, who contributed one each.

Ryan de Melo made 32 saves for the Havoc on 35 shots. Huntsville registered zero goals on four power play opportunities. The Havoc ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Schneider was ejected from the game. Parker Van Buskirk recorded 27 saves for the FireAntz. Fayetteville registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
