Pensacola wins tough contest against Peoria, 3-2

The Pensacola Ice Flyers gutted out a close 3-2 win against the Peoria Rivermen.

Neither team gained more than a one-goal lead, and Adam Pawlick's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Pensacola pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 56 penalty minutes.

The Ice Flyers were sparked by Pawlick, who finished with one goal. Pawlick scored 19:01 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Pensacola. Josh Cousineau picked up the assist.

Pensacola forced Peoria goalie Kyle Rank to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots.

Others who scored for Pensacola included Stephen Buco and Joe Caveney, who scored one goal each. In addition, Pensacola received assists from Mike Krieg, Brandon Zurn, Steve Bergin, and Corey Banfield, who contributed one each.

The Rivermen's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 12 minors and four majors for 54 minutes in penalty time. Peoria surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. The Rivermen had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just one goal on nine chances.

Peoria was helped by Ben Power, who racked up one goal. Power scored 17:12 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Peoria. Walker Wintoneak assisted on the tally. Peoria additionally got points from Wintoneak, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Peoria were Benjamin Rubin, Adam Stuart, and Steve Morra, who each chipped in one.

The Ice Flyers' John McLean stopped 28 shots out of the 30 that he faced. Pensacola registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Kyle Rank made 39 saves for the Rivermen on 42 shots.
